Safety has benefited from a comprehensive approach. The new Picanto boasts a full range of standard features that should an accident occur it ensures that all passengers are kept as secure as possible. The new Picanto’s defences begin with an incredibly stiff all-new body structure featuring a high percentage of high-strength steel with ring-shaped reinforcement hoops within the B- and C-pillars and additional bracing at the front between the cowl and suspension towers.

A stiff body structure with optimum crumple zones to absorb crash impacts while preventing intrusion into the passenger cell, and a complete set of passive safety equipment to cushion occupants. Pedestrians are not forgotten, either, with measures to minimise any injury should the car come into contact with the most vulnerable road users.

To aid side-impact protection, the B-pillars and side sills are reinforced with high-tensile steel plates, while the anti-intrusion door beams are extended to overlap the B-pillars. Polyurethane pads are fitted within the front door trims. Pedestrian safety is enhanced by a new cross member beneath the front bumper, plus a deformable cowling ahead of the windscreen and a bonnet striker plate which is offset by 50mm from the centre-line of the car.

Kia’s approach is that the most survivable accident is the one that never happens, and the new Picanto has a full range of electronic safety measures to help ensure that crashes will be a rarity. It comes as standard with the potentially life-saving feature of electronic stability control (ESC) to keep the car on course in slippery conditions or when cornering in an over-exuberant manner.

All versions have anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) to apportion stopping effort to the wheels with most traction, and emergency brake assist system (BAS), ensuring maximum stopping power regardless of the pressure applied to the pedal by the driver.

Hill-start assist control (HAC) is also standard. This holds the car briefly when the driver releases the brake pedal while setting off on slopes to help ensure it does not roll back. VSM connects the ESC and steering systems, improving the safety of the vehicle by detecting and minimising skidding by controlling over-steer in adverse conditions and helping to reduce the risk of accidents.

Adaptive Brake Lights (Emergency Stop Signalling) are also a standard feature. When sensors detect a sharp deceleration in emergency braking conditions, the brake lights flash three times to warn other drivers that the car is braking sharply. This gives other motorists following behind more time to react and potentially avoid a hazardous situation ahead.

And should the worst happen, every Picanto has six airbags as standard (front, side and curtain) to cushion heads and torsos against impacts. Front seat-belt pre-tensioners and load limiters brace occupants against a crash impact while reducing the risk of chest injury.

Security features include burglar alarm, visible VIN and remote central locking with fold-away key.

The new Picanto is only 60mm longer than its predecessor so that it still occupies slightly less than 3.6 metres of road space, but an increase of 15mm in wheelbase allied to some clever packaging ideas have resulted in significantly more cabin space. Front legroom has increased by 36mm, for example, while luggage capacity is 27% greater at 200 litres – and all with no change in the Picanto’s height or width.

The new Picanto comes with revised running gear. Featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear, a layout which gives the best combination of ride and handling while minimising intrusions into passenger and luggage space.

The front suspension helps towards improved straightline stability, while longer wheel travel and softer springs give a more supple ride. The rear axle is stiffer in the new Picanto to improve agility. Stability and ride comfort also benefit.

The 5-seat Picanto’s new-found maturity is reflected in the interior design and the choice of sophisticated trim materials, which set a new benchmark in the A-sector for quality. All the major controls are arranged in a way that is attractive while ensuring they are easy to use.

The layout emphasises the width and space of the cabin and thanks to the Picanto’s long wheelbase, the cabin provides ample legroom whilst the 60:40 split-folding second row seats create more space and a practical luggage area. Standard convenience features include a driver’s seat height adjuster, tilt steering wheel adjustment, front electric windows, trip computer, and all-round height adjustable headrests (all 5 seats). In-car entertainment is provided by a standard RDS radio and CD player with MP3 compatibility with 4 speakers.

The Picanto 2 comes with manual air conditioning, an iPod cable, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, two additional speakers, electric and heated folding door mirrors with LED side repeaters, all-round electric windows, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift and Bluetooth with voice activation and recognition enabling you to make telephone calls conveniently and safely with the hands-free voice activated function.

The Picanto 3 adds automatic headlights with projection lamps, full automatic air conditioning, 6 speaker audio and you can even enjoy the luxury of heated front seats (with two heat settings) on cold mornings.

The new, second-generation Kia Picanto proves that small cars can offer more of everything without ballooning in size and cost. It delivers the best of both worlds – stronger performance with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions; more style with much higher quality, without a premium price tag; more space, despite barely increasing in size; and significant steps forward in safety and luxury. The new Picanto is truly the small car grown up.

As well as offering new levels of powertrain efficiency, it boasts a distinctive exterior, sophisticated interior, and numerous ‘large car’ advanced comfort and safety features like LED daytime running lights, grip-type outside door handles and six airbags. The new Picanto will also maintain Kia’s reputation for delivering great value.

Kia’s smallest car is a global model, built in South Korea and slots seamlessly into the European A-segment. This class is growing in importance as buyers, particularly those who live in crowded cities, look to downsize to reduce their car ownership costs and CO2 emissions. But they want to do so without sacrificing any of the comforts, luxuries, refinement, style and safety they have become used to.

Kia have released advance model launch information for the all-new Kia Picanto 5-door.

Following its unveiling earlier this year at the Geneva Motorshow in March the all-new Picanto has been re-designed and re-engineered with stand-out styling and is destined to be a highly competitive newcomer in the A-segment as the ‘small car grown up’.

As previously published, the launch of the full range of new Picanto 5-door 5-seat model will feature the familiar 1, 2, 3 grade structure and will offer two brand new Kappa petrol engines. The first is a 1-litre CVVT 3-cylinder engine with 68 bhp mated with a 5-speed manual transmission and the second is a 1.25 CVVT 4-cylinder engine with 84 bhp mated with a 5-speed Manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Also available with the Picanto line up is Kia’s fuel-stretching EcoDynamics (which includes Intelligent Stop – and – Go) technology, cutting emissions so that every model is £0 VED for the first year and three out of five models in the line up are London congestion charge exempt. Exhaust emissions have been significantly reduced, so that CO2 emissions range from 99 to 125 g/km.

The new Picanto 5-door model is a highly equipped, luxurious model with many innovative technological features, all offered at a compelling price combined with a pioneering 7 Year Warranty.
