Picanto News: Kia Picanto Diesel Debut At Frankfurt

With an all-new three-cylinder engine, the 1.1-litre CRDi common rail diesel Picanto was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show today.

Powered by a sophisticated 75 ps engine with a variable-geometry turbocharger, the Picanto looks set to boost sales of the corporation´s A-Segment model even further when it goes on sale later this year.

Developed at Kia´s ´Centre of Diesel Engineering Excellence´ at its R&D facility in Germany, the 1,120 cc diesel engine generates 75 ps (55.0 kW) of power at 4,000 rpm and 153 Nm (15.6 kgm) of torque from 1,900 to 2,750 rpm, making the Picanto one of the most powerful cars in its class. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission equipped with a unique set of gear ratios to suit the characteristics of the diesel engine.

Diesel Picanto will accelerate from 0-to-100 kph in 16.0 seconds and will reach a maximum speed of 162 kph. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is just 4.2 l/100 km, so a range of 800 kilometres between fuel stops is possible. This Picanto is also one of the world´s cleanest, most efficient cars, with a CO2 rating of just 112 g/km.

The car is due for UK launch in November and will be offered in a choice of two equipment levels - LX and EX.

  • Today is very sad for me as my ambition of getting a diesel Kia Picanto in the UK, looks like a pipe dream!

As we all know, the Picanto Diesel has been available Europe since last year and SG PETCH have been promoting for ages see: http://kia-picanto.sgpetch.co.uk/pages/new...CRDi_Diesel_5dr

Today, I went into my local Kia Dealer (Tippens) and asked "when can I test drive the Kia Picanto diesel?" They (Geoff Garner, 1377ggarner@kiakom.net) phoned Kia HQ UK and was told it would not happen as there is a problem is RHD conversion with the bigger diesel engine and the cost is too high.

So much for customer wants, economy and global warming! What more can I say? Maybe someone could follow this up and confirm the situation?

  • Thanks for the heads up Alan. We have been asking the same questions since Kia announced the diesel car would come into the UK late 2005.

Like you, we have asked dealers to clarify the situation and they are as much in the dark as we are. Kia won't tell us anything either, so your latest information is interesting indeed. It has been suggested before that it may be an emissions problem, but that's unlikely as the car is in Europe and we share the same emission tests as them anyway. So the RHD situation sounds more plausible.

I've spoken to SG Petch before about that link and they said that the reason for displaying it is because like everybody else, their expecting the car.

I'll give them the heads up on your latest information and maybe they can ask some questions based on your latest news.

If any Kia dealers are reading this, can you ask the question also.

    Much appreciated!!

  • SG Petch have since removed the link to the diesel Picanto on their site until Kia can confirm it is coming to the UK.

We've also posted a new article here which touches on the subject.

  • I can understand all the disappointment about not being able to get a RHD diesel Picanto. I recently had a LHD one as a hire car in the French Alps and I was astounded at its performance and economy. We got 3 adults and 3 suitcases in and it took it all in its stride. There was loads of power and the twisting steep roads were no problem at all.

  • the picanto is made in rhd for the malaisa market in 1.1 petrol so i find it hard to believe that old excuse i would think that its for the same reason they never sold the opel kadett in 1.5 diesel in ireland, the oil retail/distributors intrests did nt want a really fuel efficent car available or everyone would get one and the demand for fuel would be hit.
